Four Chiropractic Techniques That May Help Relieve Chronic Sinusitis

by Charlie Berry

If you suffer from chronic sinusitis and the associated symptoms of sinus pressure, pain and nasal congestion, you've probably tried the usual remedies. While the typical treatment options such as medication, pain relievers and steam might bring some relief, you might benefit from chiropractic sinus adjustment. This may be helpful if your facial or cranial bones are out of alignment, as lymphatic fluid drainage may be impaired, causing inflammation of the sinuses. Several chiropractic treatment options exist for targeting chronic sinusitis, including these four most commonly performed procedures:

1. Manipulation Therapy

Basically, this term refers to exerting pressure along the facial or sinus cavities (and possibly the spine or neck region) with the use of the hands. Your chiropractor is trained in manual manipulation techniques to treat a variety of health issues, including chronic sinus headaches and pressure.

During manipulative therapy, your chiropractor will most likely target the frontal sinus cavities, which are directly above the eyebrows and at the top part of your nose. The maxillary sinuses below your cheekbones may also be targeted during this technique.

One way your chiropractor may manipulate the facial area is by administering a maxillary massage. Applying gentle pressure with the hands along the cheekbone area, the goal is to promote better drainage of the sinuses by opening the nasal passages. The chiropractor may simultaneously massage the frontal sinus area as well.

You should note that manual manipulative therapy may not be an option for patients with some medical issues, including bone facial fractures and some types of cancer. To determine if manipulative therapy is right for you, inform your doctor of any health issues or existing medical conditions you have. In addition, be sure to let your chiropractor know if the technique causes you significant pain or discomfort.

2. Balloon Insertion (Sinuplasty)

Although somewhat more invasive than massage and manipulative therapy, your chiropractor may suggest a form of nasal-specific treatment. In some cases, combining both methods may bring expedited relief. By inserting tiny "balloons" into the nasal cavity, blocked sinus passages may open more fully, allowing better drainage of fluid, helping to alleviate the pressure and pain.

This technique is sometimes referred to as balloon sinuplasty. It may be a good alternative to surgery, as no tissue or bone will need to be cut and no incisions are performed. Although ear, nose and throat specialists commonly perform this procedure, some chiropractors are experienced in this technique as well, so you might want to inquire about it.

3. Trigger Point Therapy

This adjustment involves exerting pressure along common trigger points on neck or spinal area. Trigger points are nodes that connect to tissue that may become tense and form a knot. This tension may cause pressure that affects the sinuses. During trigger point therapy, your chiropractor may massage these trigger points along the neck and spine directly, or in more severe cases, administer injections with a numbing agent.

4. Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a technique that involves manual manipulation of the skull and tissues within. With hands-on manipulation, your chiropractor will gently massage cranial bones and the spinal column to release tension and pressure. By doing so, blood circulation is improved and sinus fluids are easily drained. Your doctor may ask you to focus on your breathing as this technique is performed.

As a side note, don't stop your prescribed medications or seek alternative therapy without first discussing it with your general practitioner. It should also be noted that the above mentioned techniques should be performed by a trained professional. Discuss your symptoms with your physician and ask for a chiropractic referral if you feel it may help address your specific issues.
