3 Reasons Your Child May Need A Child Psychiatrist

by Charlie Berry

Many people turn to psychiatrists to help with mood, mental, and behavioral disorders. While most people associate therapy visits with adults, kids may need help too. If you would like to know more, check out these three reasons your child may need a child psychiatrist.

1. Major Traumatic Life Event

Some kids excel at life until a traumatic event affects their mental health. These may include:

  • Divorce
  • Death of a close loved one
  • New parent or stepparent
  • Abuse

In addition, if your child was involved in an accident or experienced a major injury, they could start to develop fears and phobias, especially if the accident affected their mental or physical features.

2. Signs of Depression and Anxiety

Anyone can struggle with depression and anxiety, regardless of age. If not treated, kids suffering with depression or anxiety may become withdrawn, angry, scared, etc. Depending on your child's age, vocabulary, and emotional intelligence, they may be able to explain their issues. However, many kids don't understand the problem.

In this case, look for signs of depression and anxiety, which are similar and include:

  • Anger
  • Sadness
  • Changes in sleep
  • Changes in appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Trouble concentrating

3. Signs of Other Disorders

There are many disorders with which a child may struggle, including:

  • Autism
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Oppositional defiant disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Learning disorders
  • Conduct disorders
  • Eating disorder
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder

If your child shows signs of these disorders, it's best to make an appointment with a child psychiatrist. Treatment can better help you and your child identify triggers, problems, and much more. Plus, early treatment often improves results. Your pediatrician may have an easier time spotting signs, so make sure to report any possible issues.

If your child is showing extreme signs of major issues like suicidal attempts or psychosis, seek medical attention immediately to prevent your child from harming themselves or others. Depending on the situation, you may even need to check your child into a psychiatric ward for a short time. There, they will be monitored to prevent self-harm and treated for their condition, which may include therapy or medication.

Ideally, every child is happy, healthy, and loving life. However, many children struggle with disorders that cause them to struggle at home, in school, and with friends. Early intervention can help reduce the symptoms and may prevent the condition from getting worse. If you would like to know more, contact a child psychiatrist today.

About Me

Chiropractic Healing Works

I used to be skeptical about chiropractic healing. However, that was before I tried it for myself. I was in an accident that did serious damage to my back. I followed all of the doctor’s recommendations, did my physical therapy, and still didn’t feel any better. That was when I finally decided to try going to my friend’s chiropractor. It was such a relief when I finally started to feel better thanks to the great chiropractic care I received. That’s when I decided to start researching chiropractic care and how it could be used to treat different conditions. This blog contains the results of that research. If you’re looking for a way to feel better, you too may benefit from chiropractic healing. These articles will help you learn how.
