3 Common Causes Of Spinal Injuries

by Charlie Berry

Because spinal injuries often affect the nerves, they can be very serious. The severity depends upon what part of the spine received injury. The worst injuries cause a loss of movement, loss of bladder control, chronic pain, or changes in sexual function. Many people who receive an injury to the spine seek treatment at a spine injury rehabilitation center.

There are many causes of spinal injuries. Here are three of the most common ones.

1. Car Accidents

About 9,600 men and women each year receive a spinal injury when getting into a car accident, making auto accidents the number one cause of these types of injuries. This is due to the fact that car accidents cause a sudden blow to the spine, which can crush or dislocate one or more vertebrae. One of the best ways to avoid spinal injury in a car accident is to wear a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt along with using airbags provides the best possible chance of preventing a spinal injury.

2. Falls

Every year, approximately 6,600 men and women sustain an injury to their spine because of a fall. These falls happen in a variety of different ways, including falling from a ladder or another high place, slipping and falling on the ground, or falling down a flight of stairs. Spinal injury occurs as a result of the body making an impact with a hard surface. Older people are at a higher risk of falling. In fact, one-third of people over the age of 65 falls at least once a year.

In order to prevent getting injured from falling, it's important to use safe practices when it's necessary to be high up off the ground and to always use handrails on stairs. Older people can prevent falls by wearing the right shoes, getting rid of rugs and other things they can easily trip over, and using assistive devices, such as canes or walkers.

3. Gunshot Wounds

About 4,700 people a year receive a spinal injury because of a gunshot wound. A bullet that barely touches the spine can still cause serious injury. In order to prevent gunshot wounds, it's always best to use gun safety when handling firearms. Some of these safety practices include:

  • Knowing how to use the gun
  • Keeping guns unloaded and in a gun safe or ather secure place
  • Storing ammunition in a separate location

Parents should also teach their children about gun safety.

Other common causes of spinal injuries include diving accidents, motorcycle accidents, falling objects, and surgical complications.

About Me

Chiropractic Healing Works

I used to be skeptical about chiropractic healing. However, that was before I tried it for myself. I was in an accident that did serious damage to my back. I followed all of the doctor’s recommendations, did my physical therapy, and still didn’t feel any better. That was when I finally decided to try going to my friend’s chiropractor. It was such a relief when I finally started to feel better thanks to the great chiropractic care I received. That’s when I decided to start researching chiropractic care and how it could be used to treat different conditions. This blog contains the results of that research. If you’re looking for a way to feel better, you too may benefit from chiropractic healing. These articles will help you learn how.
