Time To Have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed? 3 Tips To Help You Through The Recovery

by Charlie Berry

Wisdom teeth are no laughing matter, especially if they've become impacted – which means they don't have enough room to grow, or they're failing to break through the gum tissue. In either case, impacted wisdom teeth can be very painful, and will need to be removed. If you've been scheduled for oral surgery to have your wisdom teeth removed, you'll need to be prepared for the recovery period. Here are three tips that will help you get through the recovery period.

Have Someone with You

When you go in for surgery, you'll need to have someone with you. First, you won't be able to drive yourself home after the surgery, which means you'll need someone who's available to drive. Second, you're going to need to have your prescriptions picked up so that you can have immediate access to your antibiotics and pain medication. Third, you'll need to rest for a couple of days. During those first couple of days, you won't be able to bend over or do anything strenuous. Bending over or doing too much could cause your stitches to break, which could lead to excessive bleeding. Have someone with you who can assist during those first couple days after surgery. Above all else, get plenty of rest while you have someone there to help.

Keep Things Cool

While you're recovering from oral surgery, you'll want to keep things as cool as possible, including your face and your food.

Face

Post-operative swelling is normal following oral surgery. However, there are some things you can do to help prevent excessive swelling. The main thing is to apply ice. If you don't like the feel of ice on your face, soak a wash cloth and place it in the freezer. Once it's frozen, place the cloth on your face. When your cloth gets warm, place it back in the freezer. Repeat the process for at least 24 hours after surgery.

Food

Your face is going to be numb following oral surgery, which means you won't be able to feel the temperature of your food. To avoid serious burns, keep your food cool. Avoid hot soups and drinks until the numbness wears off.

Know the Warning Signs

After surgery, your mouth will need time to heal. During the healing process, it's important that you know the warning signs. Some of the warning signs you should watch for include:

  • Excess swelling or bleeding
  • Pain that's not controlled by medication
  • Sudden onset of fever

If you're going to have oral surgery to remove your wisdom teeth, it's time to prepare for the recovery period. Following surgery, the tips provided here will help you have a comfortable recovery. About Me

Chiropractic Healing Works

I used to be skeptical about chiropractic healing. However, that was before I tried it for myself. I was in an accident that did serious damage to my back. I followed all of the doctor’s recommendations, did my physical therapy, and still didn’t feel any better. That was when I finally decided to try going to my friend’s chiropractor. It was such a relief when I finally started to feel better thanks to the great chiropractic care I received. That’s when I decided to start researching chiropractic care and how it could be used to treat different conditions. This blog contains the results of that research. If you’re looking for a way to feel better, you too may benefit from chiropractic healing. These articles will help you learn how.
